Dal libro-inchiesta (1991) di Corrado Stajano, adattato da Graziano Diana e Angelo Pasquini. Una tragedia milanese, anzi italiana: nel 1974 l'avvocato civilista milanese Giorgio Ambrosoli è nominato commissario liquidatore di una banca del finanziere Michele Sindona. Scopre il groviglio di interessi che legano Sindona, alcuni esponenti politici (tra cui Giulio Andreotti), la mafia e il Vaticano. Resiste a suggerimenti, pressioni, minacce. Nella notte tra l'11 e il 12 luglio 1979 è assassinato da un sicario di Sindona. Un inutile crimine di pura vendetta, perciò ancor più abietto. Pur con difetti di ambientazione e di rievocazione dell'aria del tempo, un film giusto. Onesto, sincero, lucido, con momenti di emozionante delicatezza, è un giallo politico-finanziario nutrito, come il libro, di passione civile, sostenuto dalla quieta intensità di Bentivoglio (e dalla torva potenza con cui Antonutti raffigura Sindona) e dalla funzionale fotografia di Luca Bigazzi.
